The Islay loot June 2010

2010-06-21_21

Of course I went shopping on Islay (and on the journey). This is what I brought back (less the Islay beach rugby T-shirt, which is in the laundry).

Those tiny Laphroaig bottles are USB sticks, not very big (1 GB) but I liked the idea. The glasses are the "wobbly" ones from Bunnahabhain.

Oh *******. They didn't have those on Islay

2010-06-20_15

Apparently 60 minutes delay between junction 19 and 17 on the M6. No idea why, no travel update on the radio. Great.

The sad journey back from Islay

2010-06-20_12

Driving south on boring motorways. Just arrived in Carlisle for some quick shopping and lunch.

Sorry, sunset in Cairndow isn't as good as on Islay

2010-06-19_19

Simple reason that the sun just disappears behind the hills on the other side of the loch.

Sunny ferry crossing from Islay

2010-06-19_16

Having left the Sound of Islay behind us we're now on the "open sea" on the way to Kennacraig. MacArthur's Head with the surrounding hills on Islay in the picture. As well as lots of blue sky.

Leaving Port Askaig, Islay

2010-06-19_15

I guess that's my summer holiday on Islay pretty much over. At least it looks like it will be a pleasant ferry crossing.

Waves in Saligo Bay, Islay

2010-06-19_12

While we have brilliant sunshine and blue sky there's a rather cold fresh wind blowing today. Still a great view a few hours before I'm due to leave Islay.

Back on Islay after a fantastic walk on Jura

Well, that's me safely back on Islay after a brilliant day walking. Unfortunately this will be my last night on Islay as I have to leave tomorrow for the long journey south to Aldermaston Wharf. But back to today's walk:

I took the first ferry to Jura this morning and drove up to the Three Arched Bridge. By 8:15 I was walking, following the track west of the Corran River. After a while I reached Loch an t-Siob, where I crossed the river to the north using the stepping stones.

Now the real ascent could begin. First I climbed up to the saddle between the Paps, then continued to the foot of Beinn an Oir.

Using mostly the (sometimes vague) track I climbed to the summit of Beinn an Oir. Here I spent about 45 minutes, taking pictures and eating lunch. Soon after noon I started the descent along the southern ridge.

Arriving at saddle again by 13:00 I decided I had just enough time to climb Beinn Shiantaidh. Climbing up the western side and following an occasional vague path I made it to the summit by 13:45. This time. I only spent 15 minutes at the top, taking pictures and eating a quick snack.

I dropped back down to the saddle and then followed the same route back as I had walked out in the morning. By 16:55 I was back at my car, allowing me to catch the 17:55 ferry back to Islay as planned.

Not sure about the miles I walked, I guess about 8 or so with about a 1000 metres in height gained. The whole walk including breaks took 9 hours. After some initial clouds had lifted it was sunny the whole time, although unfortunately rather hazy.

Now it's time for a shower and a well earned beer.

Looking back to the Paps of Jura

2010-06-18_15

May be I should make this my last Jura picture for today? A wonderful view back to the Paps of Jura, two of them I've been on today.

Another 45 minutes or so to the car, well on plan so far.
