Isle of Islay

Yay, anything Islay goes here

The Islay (and Colonsay) Loot April 2012

A bit late, but here's what I brought back from my recent Islay holiday. Goods from Islay, Colonsay and even a few bottles from the mainland managed to get in.
Mainly the usual suspects, whisky from Bruichladdich and Laphroaig, beer from Islay and Colonsay and the famous Colonsay honey. The book is a signed copy bought at Islay studios. Also some jam and a few bottles from Fyne Ales managed to muscle their way in.
Also had some smoked salmon from Loch Fyne, but that's either eaten or in the fridge.

Being lazy today and not going for a walk. But then again not really lazy as I went for a photo run in Machir Bay. I hope you'll enjoy the views.

Off to Bowmore soon. Afternoon to be decided and probably Saligo Bay in the evening.

Islay walking week day 6: Bholsa

(download)

Believe it or not, although the pictures prove it, another sunny day for the Islay walking week. Stunning views today in the north of Islay.

From Bunnahabhain we walked up north along the Sound of Islay, turning west just before the lighthouse at Rhuvaal. We had lunch at the big cave at Bholsa, visited some amazing natural arches before continuing to Bholsa. Amazing views at the old croft. Finally returned through the glen to Bunnahabhain.

Several Adders were spotted, a Lizard and a lot of deer. Sunshine all the way through. And a wee dram arrived for us as we returned, thank you, Bunnahabhain!

Islay walking week day 5: Colonsay

(download)

Wednesday of the Islay walking week, time for the now traditional excursion to Colonsay. This year we explored the north:

After a quick shuttle with a few Land Rover our walk started at Kiloran Bay. Lunch was with fantastic views above the bay. We then continued north past the whale, also watching an Eagle. Final destination was Balnahard Bay.

A great day out in beautiful sunshine. More of the same tomorrow please!

Islay walking week day 4: South coast

(download)

After the rain last night we were a bit worried how today might develop, we were positively surprised: apart from a short strong shower we had mostly beautiful sunshine.

Our walk today took us mostly along the shore with some amazing views of the skerries. We also watched an Otter hunting in the sea for quite some time. A great walk in an area most of us had never seen before.

Off to Colonsay on Wednesday, fingers crossed we'll be lucky with the weather again!

Islay walking week day 3: Proaig and MacArthur's Head

(download)

Back to walking today after the break yesterday. We walked from Ardtalla to Proaig and then on to MacArthur's Head with the lighthouse. One of my favourite walks on Islay.

Not sure of the exact number, but I think about 30 walkers joined today. Sunny again for large parts of the walk, although it clouded over for part of the return leg.

It's raining on Islay now, fingers crossed it will dry up for tomorrow's walk!

Sunny day at Machir Bay, Islay

(download)

Just back from a fantastic few hours at Machir Bay on another chilly but beautiful sunny April day on Islay. Spent some time experimenting with the GoPro Hero, letting the waves wash over it and similar things. Not sure yet if it'll work, won't have time to edit the footage until I'm home anyway.

Also took a few pictures and panoramas with the phone, hope you'll enjoy them. And yes, someone went for a swim in one of the pictures.
